No, Hemp was used for making Clothes and Rope. The strain that Washington was growing was not even good to smoke. He did like to drink though.

Yes many of the older Popes were drunks. and well not very Saintly. I suggest further study on

Drugs such as Hemp have been outlawed - even though they have a wide range of uses - apart from illegal.

Drug use has been behind many of our most creative moments by singers / song writers / bands. I am sure that the Beatles were on something when singing 'I am the walrus!
I doubt Pink Floyd were completely sober either.
