A few years ago, I went to UMD. I had no money. Most my friends spent all of Daddy's money going to Cancun or Jamaica, which I couldn't afford. So senior year, my roommate and I decided we needed to go somewhere, so we went to Panama City, FL. This is how we saved money:
1) We drove.
2) We stayed at a not-so-nice (but not too crappy) motel.
3) Pre-drank a lot. Better to spend $5 on a cheap 12-pack than $5 on a beer at the bar.
4) Bought a lot of food from the grocery store. Eating out adds up.
5) The one or two times we did eat out we went during Happy hour when things are much cheaper.
6) The local "hot" club had a $20 cover at night. We would go earlier in the day when there is no cover, get our hand stamped, then come back later so we wouldn't have to pay the ridiculous cover.
7) Motel was close so we didn't waste money on cab fare, we could walk.
8) We wore last year's swim suits instead of buying new ones.
9) Found "free fun" by hanging out at hot tub parties at the nice hotels, for free. Somehow we always found people there who brought 30-packs to the hot tub and didn't mind giving them out to everyone.
It's possible to have an awesome spring break on a small budget, I did it! And I had best time ever...I couldn't have asked for a better time.

Road trips are great. One year I went to Florida (although I flew). I had three friends who lived in Boca Raton. I stayed at their houses. It was really fun, and I spent almost no money. We took a day trip to Disney and a day trip to Miami.
This year, I'm a senior at UMD (GO TERPS!) and decided to splurge as I figure it's my last chance for a spring break. If you're an underclassmen, doing an inexpensive Spring Break is the way to go, but if you are a Senior... don't cheat yourself out of a great experience!
