Who will win more Olympic medals in the next summer Olympics and why?

No I'm not a homer, but the USA do to the sheer number of athletes we enter into the various events. In 2000 it was USA 97 medals Australia 58. In 2004 USA 103 medals Australia 49 medals. That is a 56 medal deficit Australia must over come. Keep in mind USA doesn't even do well in hockey (what rest of the world calls field-hockey) or other events that aren't as popular in this nation.
Australia matches up well in many sports and events but must find more success in not just traditional strong sports hockey, swimming/water sports, athletics, and triathlon to name a few , but also find some new individual events Australia has not won medals in before.
When was last time an Australian won medals in wrestling or boxing. What about gymnastics is that improving. Finally you have tennis players , but how come not more success in the Olympics?

Not a contest - US in a landslide. US won over twice as many metals as Australia in Athens. However, based on population size Australia does better than anybody else.

The U.S will probably win more medals.
However the Australians are unbelievabley competitve for such a small nation. Go aussies!
