Why do we put so much value on appearance? Why do we feel the need to hide our natural selves with makeup, surgery, and scanty clothing? This question has really stumped me, as I'm a nice, natural girl just trying to be herself in a critical, silicon world.

different people get pleasure in different ways
some people want to look beautiful at any cost
some people want to be natural

The media. That's why. Everywhere you turn there are woman portrayed with the latest fashion trend and covered with makeup. Most women strive for perfection, and when the media puts an airbrushed "perfect" looking woman on a magazine women feel that is what they're supposed to look like. It's sad really
Keep being yourself. It's more beautiful, will age better, and cost much less ;)

Society brain washes us we are made to believe more is better. Like more cars are better. More makeup is better. Looking really skinny is better. We feel we have to use these things to replace the things in are life that we do not have to make us seem happier and to be truthful most of my rich friends don't seem happy and i can remeber a qoute from my grandmother " Were poor but were happy only because laughter is free"

Good question... I think we value appearance so much because we are constantly surrounded by images of super models and super beautiful people. Studies have shown that better looking men and women get better jobs and promotions than more qualified "uglier" candidates. I think you are doing the right thing and what is right for you. Just remember that not everyone is capable of just being themselves so don't judge but feel sorry for them.

Well some people are unsure of their self and need the makeup to reassure their self that they are alright looking and then again t.v has made it that everyone needs to uphold a certain appearance. I truly believe that no one should ever change their appearances for any one or any reason.

these days with supermodels and plastic surgery around sometimes guys thing thats how every girl should look. But they dont understand that whats in the inside is better then whas on the outside. also we think that looking good is the only way we are going to get attention from other people. (guys)

It started with prostitutes. Way back when they first came about women would change their appearance to look more like the prostitutes to keep their men home. Now, beauty magazines promote this scandalous look by making young girls believe (and adults too, but focus is on the young girls) that this is what they need to look like and if you don't guys won't like you. The sad part is that it actually works and girls end up committing suicide because they can't look like the models in the magazines. Just be yourself, be happy with who you are and how you look and other people will notice and will like you too. :)

That great you feel that way about yourself. But its is not bad to put on a little. But some people over use their makeup and end up looking like clowns.

I feel the same way except when it comes to the make up part! I LOVE make up but not to much! Makeup is for enhancing too me!!! I do not however, know why we Americans feel the need to where skimpy clothing and surgically remove all of our impurity's!!

No self confidence, it appears some of us, need support to face life, a better image, perfume, sugery, implants, skin coloring and even drugs.........There is a guy out there...looking for a natural girl, just trying to be herself, and full of natural, everyday warm heart.....Darlin, save your money. Makeup, surgery, skimpy clothing... none of it makes sense. I am like you in believing that natural beauty is so much better. Its hard to be yourself, and to be who YOU want to be. Just don't fall into the trap of being someone who you are not... that's one of life's biggest challenges.
