Casablanca
All the movie people claim that it is Citizen Kane But Citizen Kane has 2 major flaws in it that prevent it from being a populist choice;
To understand the greatness of CK you have to really understand movies from a very technical perspective . If you're not in the industry you won't get it.
Secondly the audience never really bonds with or genuinely cares about the character
In movies like Casablanca , The Godfather, The Grapes of Wrath and The Titanic the audience has made an emotional investment in the characters and genuinely cares about what happens to them,not so w/CK

It's cliched, but it's true. Citizen Kane is the greatest movie of all time.

Every shot is perfect. The pacing is impeccable. The acting, the dialog, the arcs of the characters... all perfect.

There are movies that mean more to me as a film buff, but nothing has been made as technically perfect as Citizen Kane. It has no flaws, and nothing since has matched it.

That's a difficult question & it is certainly open to interrpretation. I think the most overrated movie of all time that normally wins this award is "Citizen Kane." In my opinion, I think "The Princess Bride" is a truely great film. Romance, action adventure, comedy & rodents of unusal size. It has it all. Besides the fact that it is endlessly quoteable--

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die."

"Inconcievible!" & so on.

The film is timeless. Unlike other movies, I never gets tired of it & it never fails to entertain.

"The Princess Bride" is a classic & possibly the greatest film of all time.

It's really a toss between:
It's A Wonderful Life
The Wizard of Oz
Gone With The Wind

For recent pictures, it would have to be "Grease". (the original)
