My daughter was inhaling a helium balloon and passed out for a second. She is 8 and was obviously freaked out. she felt nasueas and had a headache, so I gave her motrin and she watched tv for about a hour and a half. Should I have taken her to the er? she did hit her head on the floor so it did hurt but there isn't a lump. What should I look for? should I wake her periodically during the night?

dizzy , disoriented, cold sweat, glassy eyes, vomiting.

technically any head trauma should be checked out, but I know you mom, (I'm the same) wait it out. If she seemed fine and was her usual self before she went to bed, she's probably fine. If she seemed lethargic and you had a time getting her to move after her ordeal, I would say keep a close eye on her and take her to ER as soon as you can.

also - note to self: daughter obviously doens't handle helium very well.

I would first try to be clear on whether your child passed out while inhaling the helium ~ or because of being nasueas, felt dizzy, lost her balance, fell, hit her head, and then lost consciousness from hitting her head. If it was the latter, some of the most common symptoms to watch for are: If her reflexes are normal, are her pupils responding to light normally and how severe is the headache?

Is she experiencing any of the following? Dizziness, confusion, irritability,or vomiting?

Other possible symptoms of a concussion can be: Numbness, nausea, vomiting, dilated pupils, pupils which are different sizes, mental confusion, memory problems, unusual behavior, difficulty with vision, difficulty waking up (grogginess) or convulsions.

If you have any doubt or question at all ~ the best advice I can give is to seek medical attention. When it comes to our childrens health and well-being, erring on the cautious side is always preferable to erring on the other.

Good luck and I hope all is well by the time you read this.

I don't know if it was a concussion or not. But inhaling helium isn't a good idea. especially for a child. Call your family doctor.
Normally the post concussion routine is.... Don't allow the patient to sleep for more than an hour at a tiem for the next 24 hours. Wake her up every hour. Flash a flashlight in her eyes to see if her eyes dialate (change size). If they don't dialate. Go immediately to the hospital.

Ok...passing out is not a normal reaction and she passed out before she hit her head. Inhaling helium is also not a good idea for an 8 year old. If she were my daughter I would take her to the ER....now.

anytime there is a loss of consciousness, the person should seek medical attention.

the nausea and headache concerns me as these are symptoms of a concussion.

i would take a trip to the er or an urgent care close to you just to have her checked out. they will do some head xrays and possibly a ct scan of her brain to make sure there was no significant injury.

avoid giving her anymore pain medication until she is seen. over the counter pain pills thin the blood and in the event that she has a bleed in her brain ( there is a slight chance of this ocurring) it could make it worse.

call 911 immediately if

-she passes out again
-seems confused or disoriented
-is overly sleepy
-complains of a severe headache that won't stop
-starts to profusely vomit

make sure to get her checked out asap as there is no way to really tell what type of injury she sustained without the proper testing

hope she feels better soon

With children, its ALWAYS better safe than sorry, especially with a head injury, take her in and have her examined. I'm sure you would rather have the co pay or charge for an ER visit then chance the posibiliy of what could happen if you dont. Hope this helps, Good luck.

ok sucking helium is bad in genral, but for an 8 year old its worse, she pased out because of lack of O2 or oxygen. This is bad cause there was a short lapse in brain activity, id recomend taking her to the hospital just to be sure nothing went really wrong

If she hasn't complained of double vision or been throwing up, I would think that there is no concussion to worry about. Just keep an eye on her, and wake her periodically through the night--more for your peace of mind. If she can answer basic questions like what her name is, and how old she is, then I wouldn't worry about it.

if there are uneven dilated pupils , vomiting, or she cant answer simple questions take her in . If there isn't any sign of trauma ( bump, ) just watch her . but a good rule of thumb if your not sure about anything health wise ask your doctor
