Rent a U-Haul pickup and trailer in Miami for local use unlimited mileage, several days use, make the trip up drive it back, turn it in in Miami and jump the Greyhound or Amtrak back to NYC.
That last part's a good way to get hubby out of the house while you unpack the kitchen and arrange the furniture the way you want it without him underfoot. ;) Besides the lone man on the road spirit of adventure blah blah blah it's manly.
Ok blast me for the fraudulent use of the rental. C'mon I'm ready.
Captains Log Supplemental: It was on my review of the question and asker that I realized there might not be a hubby involved as it could as easily be roommates or brothers. For the record I have rendered a hearty slap to my forehead and uttered DOH! over the intercom to all levels of the ship. That is all

If I were you, I'd unload as much furniture as you could in FLA, until you're down to a carload's worth... then drive the car to NYC and sell it. (beware: they have smog laws you must pass.) If you can bear doing an extra round trip, you could haul another carload's worth plus a small trailerload, by returning the trailer in the same town you rent it. (that costs MUCH less.)
$1000 sounds about right for a truck rental. SFO-SEA was about the same. For that price I almost wonder if a moving company might be cheaper, especially if you were flexible about delivery time.

If you have things that are not of great value, sell it and buy when you get there. I moved from Ga. to Mi and it was 700.00 at budget which was the cheapest, if I had to do it again, I would have sold everything and started over.

i own a shop, and that's about the average price for renting one of these i don't think you,ll get a better deal than that other than if you owned a pick up truck and owned a small trailer, but that's about the best deal your going to find, good luck, hope this helps.

Have you considered having a 'moving sale' and just getting what you need when you get there? Join a local Freecycle group for the town you're moving to and see what you can find when you get there.
