Hi,
I intent to set up a new pc. My budget is below S$2k. What config do u recommend? My main purpose for this PC will be
software programming (VHDL, mathlab), normal office work and internet access, watching movies and games. (in term of priority).

Thanks.

Just to add some additional info, I be setting up from scratch (from mobo, harddisk, monitor etc) and running Vista. For gamming purpose, I not into those real time games but rather emulators and turn based RPG. Thanks.

I think you can get a good deal with an alienware computer.
Theres to much to explain for builing a pc, plus you can have a pc thats been hailed by pc magazine as having the worlds best support.....and comfort that if something dies, you have a 1yr warranty.......
This comp has it all, dual graphics cards, physics processor, blueray dvd player, for under 2K! If you had an extra $200, you could have a quad core system!

forget the accelerated graphics card thats wasted money. get something like a Nvidia 7950 GT OC 512K memory PCI EXPRESS 16 card. I have this card and havent found a game yet that will slow it down.

I would go for dual core processor I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor its not top of the line but it kicks butt. just make sure you have about 3 to 4 gigs of memory if running vista as it loves to eat memory and make sure its DDR2 ram.

try www.newegg.com they have great prices and awsome customer service too. I built my gamming computer for $1500 and couldnt be happier.

as far as the 7200 RPM hard drive. why go for such a slow hard drive. get the Western Digital RAPTOR SATA 10,000 RPM Hard Drive.

but try this site and you can put everythign in a wish list and see how much it cost before you buy.

Well, for this purpose you just need processing power (good processor) with a good on-chip L2 cache (level 2 caching), it'd be convenient for you to have 1Mb of L2 cache, i recomend an AMD processor of more that 2GHz. you'll also need a good memory RAM avalability, i suggest at least 1.5Gb RAM. You could also add a good Accelerated Graphic Card if you are planning to play games. I suggest to get at least 128Mb RAM Graphic Card because todays game are requiring having a lot of processing power and video graphic acceleration. Ohhhh, last but not least, you should also get a Serial-ATA HDD of 7200 rpm, this is also important.

This would be a good time to do a dual boot with one of the free Linux Operating Systems.

My favourite is UBUNTU.

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.
