Some left the country. A group of sympathizers here in the US attempted to resettle some of the emigrants in Pennsylvania, first in Philadelphia and subsequently in an upstate area long a bend of the Susquehanna River. You can visit this place, which is called "Queen's Asylum" (although Marie Antoinette never got there) and learn the story. Some of the French who settled in Pennsylvania went back to France when an amnesty was extended to them, but others stayed, passing on their French heritage in the local community. My own ancestors include some of these French settlers.

Actually, it depends on which side they were on. The revolution did cost a lot of money and what do you think it came from? Rich people weren't all nobles. In fact, many nobles were poor, because they indebted themselves to pay their luxurious lifestyle. Rich citizens were on the rise. And those siding with the revolution did so not only for ideals, but because they had a lot to gain.
Just look at the leaders of the revolution. Most were not some simple peasants from the province.

If they weren't aristocrats or Royalist supporters they bought up the estates of the aristos. It's how the French bourgeoisie got the capital to finance the industrialisation of France.

It was the fashion of the time for the super wealthy to have their own Gardens and in them to have little pesant houses and Pesant Farmers. In the Movie "Marie Antoinette" she is seen playing with one she actually had at the Palace of Versailles. That is being to rich when you pretend to be poor people.

Most, like my ancestors, fled to England. While most believe that they followed a similar life in England, they had to leave a huge amount of their wealth in France due to fear of being found and killed.
