Well, if the peacock carried the egg into the yard after some unidentified peahen laid it, and the peacock carefully (so as not to drop it) lays it somewhere, it would depend on who owned the peahen.
Such things are covered under 'found property laws' which generally provide some duty to inform the owner before a legitimate claim can be made.

The peacock must have taken the egg from the peahen and gently laid it upon my yard ... which means that the peacock has given up its custodial rights to the egg (since peacocks are a patriarchal society). Now that I have the egg, I just wonder how good an omelet it will make.

if your peacock laid an egg in my yard, i'd keep the bird and the egg. i'd love to have the first male bird to lay an egg, and the egg too.
