The giver is about an Utopian (tranquil) society. That is where they are all the same. The most interesting thing that it goes into detail about is when the boy starts having feelings for the opposite sex they refer to them as "stirrings" they then give their children pills so that they don't have these feelings and this boy later on realizes what is really going on and how they are all being restricted and tries to leave.
