I'd stay out of DC if you want to live. The highest crime rates in the country are in DC, Philadelphia and Detroit.
In fact, it's considered safer to enlist in the army and go to Iraq than to live in those cities, oddly enough.

Although I've been living in Florida for the past 4 years, Chicago is my hometown, and I'd move back in a flash if the opportunity was given to us. There is no other city like it! Tons of stuff to do, hundreds of fantastic restaurants and bars to choose from, loads of museums (if you're into that), etc. If you cannot afford living right in the city (it's pretty expensive), I'd suggest looking into Oak Park, which is only about 15 minutes outside the Chicago city limits. Lots of transportation options (Metra, the El, buses, etc.), one of the busiest airports in the world, and of course, the home of Blues, baby. Chicago has it all. Orlando will only offer you warmer weather (although it does get as low as 30-40 degrees in the summer; most people don't know that) and lots of Disney themed stores and billboards. No state tax down here, either. Still, I'd pick Chi-Town any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Wow, that really depends what you do and what kind of weather you like. Los Angeles has terrific weather and scenery, but terrible traffic and smog. Orlando also has good weather (if you like humidity) but is flat and sort of dull. Chicago's exciting and vibrant but absolutely freezing in the winter and also lacks for scenery outside the city. Dallas is a fun city with lots to do, but also has traffic problems and has a bit of a "cow town" image it's trying to get past. DC is again, a very interesting city, but with terrible traffic.
I mean, if you're looking for the most midrange, affordable, city with decent weather and jobs, that's probably Dallas. I personally don't find it as interesting as Chicago - I live in Chicago - but I'd certainly pick Dallas over Orlando or LA.

I've lived near Chicago (Merrillville, IN), DC (Alexandria, VA) and Dallas (Flower Mound, TX) due to my hubbys work, and of all of them, I miss Dallas the most----we lived 20 minutes from downtown, and still had more of a country atmosphere! In Chicago, to live in a decent neighborhood and not being uber-rich, you have to live at least 45 minutes away. DC was fun, but WAY to much crime. Wherever we went, it seemed there had just been a shooting. Alexandria was an awesome town, but too close to all of the chaos. I have visited Orlando, and it is BEAUTIFUL. But, hurricanes are a beeatch. Don't know about Cali, but if I had a choice, I would say Dallas.

All very expensive areas except Dallas. You do not say what you do for a living.
LA, Ca. would be last on my list - way too expensive
Orlando second to last - too hot lots of slummy areas.
Dallas is okay but too spread out but housing is affordable
Chicago - not sure I want to live there too cold and too expensive.
Northern, Virginia - DC Metro - I was raised there and spent about 22 years there: love it! So, my vote it for WDC/VA

I would go with Chicago or Dallas. I live in Florida currently and would NOT recommend Orlando. Unless you like horrible traffic, tourists, heat, rain, hurricanes, high property taxes and high homeowners insurance.

2 of your choices are on my top 5 places to live list:
Chicago and DC Metro.
I chose these because they are big cities, have VERY GOOD public transit systems, and you don't need a car in either one of them.
