ABA stands for American Banking Association. The ABA number which people ask for is the first group of numbers on the bottom left hand side of your check. Sometimes called the routing number. What the routing number does is, it is encoded with micro printing and as the check travels through its process, it tells the machines what bank to send it to, to be posted against your own checking account. If for some reason the routing number cannot be read, the check will be put into a carrier or sleeve with micro encoding so that it can be read and forwarded to your bank. Hope this helps you.
