You go in and they take your information. Then you get the monitors hooked up. You are checked for dialation and given an IV if needed.

Are you having a baby?
I had my first child at the age of 20 yrs, and i was no where near ready for the experience. Not trying to scare you. But i went to the hospital a way to early. L should have waited a few hours before heading to the hopsital. Try and wait until you can't handle the pain any longer. There is almost 16yrs between my first and my last one. You are going to her different things from evryone you talk to. You can make an appointment with the hospital and they will go over things with you more clearer than a person that is trying to give information out over the computer.

If you are asking what my story is.... I woke up, felt like I had peed (but it wasn't pee) I stood up to change cloths, had pain, went to hospital. Walked up to the proper floor, got all hooked up to the monitors then was checked to see how far dilated I was... while they were checking my water broke.. and I was told I was 5cm dilated (funny cause I was unsure if I should go in or not before deciding to go in, the pain was minimal.) Four hours after the whole thing started I had a baby boy. I was stuck in the hospital for 3 days cause my boy had Jaundice(sp) then I went home to lick my "wounds"(I tore, and no I had no meds... didn't want them and it all happened so fast for me anyway) and take care of my new baby.
Everyone's experience is different but the basic things they do while you are there are about the same... they monitor you with machines, check how far dilated and effaced you are, put in an IV. then deliver the baby.. unless there are complications this is about all they really do.

Well in my case I paged the doctor at 8am because I was leaking. Went in by 9am, took a sample and it was amniotic fluid. I went to the hospital by noon they gave me pitocin because I was not getting contractions. By 1 pm the pitocin kicked in real hard. Very bad labor pain and probable took them over an hour and a half (no kidding) for the anasticiologist to come and give me the epidural. It didn't help that the nurses had not checked how far I was dialated before the injection which would have helped because the epidural did not have much of an effect (I was able to move & stand, which you shouldn't be able to) since I was already dialated past 7 cm. My sister had to remind the nurse to check me, nurse was not sure how far I was and had to ask another nurse's advise. That nurse sd "move her, she's at 9 cm". From that point it went by fast. I was at 10 very fast and about 20 minutes of pushing and at 8:13 pm my first son was born at 8 lbs 2oz.

The joy of my son was worth every minute of the labor and then some.

I will not have my next child at that hospital that's for sure.

If you're asking for yourself, you should do a walk-thru at the maternity ward to have all your questions answered. All hospitals are different in their protocal. Your experience won't be like anyone elses in the world...

ummmm.... I had a baby, hung around for a few days, and went home with my baby. Guess I'm not entirely sure what the question is.
