ok I'm from Beckley, and I personally hate our new motto. I don't care much about the "Open for Business", to me it will always be "Wild and Wonderful." I mean I understand that other states have mottos that don't make sense to them. But the "Open for Business" motto makes it seem like we're just this hole on the US map that just got discovered. I feel like we're not every trying to attract tourists anymore, but businesses, and we tourists to come for "these" businesses. But we'll always have the John Denver song. West Virginia may not have what some states have, but taking away our old motto is very disrespectful to those of us from West Virginia--because West Virginia truly is wonderful (I'm mean for those driving through--the scenery is beautiful) and we have landmarks that are definitely wonderful.

I guess nothing stays wild in this world for very long...but open for business does sound a bit risque. I'm not from West Virginia, but you'd think they'd take something from John Denver's song since it's about your beautiful state.

I liked it better when Texas' motto was "the friendly state" rather than now, "don't mess with Texas." It's been the second for 15 years now. Well, I think it just sounds like we are a bunch of hicks with guns. Well, I suppose we do kill more of our felony convicts than any other state. Only when I came to Texas when I was a little girl, anyone from here originally was so friendly. I still think I liked the first motto better.

I am from Maryland not WV, but I have been there a few times. WV does not have a strong economy like Virgina, Maryland, PA and Ohio. I would think that by saying this WV is trying to sound like they are ready to become more business friendly like its border states. Wild and Wonderful is great, but WV is losing jobs and needs to have business coming into the state (I went to college in Maine and it has the same problem, people see Maine as a woodland vacation spot, but Maine loses business to NH and Mass all the time).

I agree w/ StaryStorms.....it sounds like WV is trying to attact businesses (not tourists). I don't really love or hate it, but it's a helluva lot better than "Baltimore....the city that reads" (old motto). I hope WV can accomplish what it is trying to do. I am Huntington born & bred (live in Baltimore now), and would love to see the city (and the state) revitalized.

I'm not from West Virginia, but my first reaction was, it sounds like they are desperate for tourists. Did people get to vote on that before they changed it?

What i respect out of existence, is waking up in the Morning and thamking God for granting me yet another day of existence. What I Hate is dropping my day on some thing that takes my total day, and that i did not get to do the flaws i love to do.
