If you bought the movie, why not?

You must have a performance license to do this legally, otherwise it is a copyright infringement.

A number of people answering seem to think you can do what you like with a movie you purchased. In fact, you license is for private home viewing only. In theory, you can't even have a party at your own home and screen a movie - but the movie companies are not going to come after you for doing that.

Showing movies in your store might be something they would prosecute, if for example a disgruntled customer or neighbor turns you in for it.

Generally, when you purchase a movie (DVD or VHS tape), it's licensed for private home viewing only. So, in that case, playing it in your business to keep your customers happy would not count, and would be a violation of the license.

However, you could always get cable TV -- that has a different license arrangement, and you could just put it on one of the movie channels.

No it is not illegal. Just be mindful of the type of people your customers are, so you don't offend anyone by the content of the movie being displayed.

Nothings worth losing customers over especially if it is losing money. On the other hand if you're gaining business to hell with the lost one. to each his own....

Why would it be illegal? I would check with you local and state statutes regarding the matter but it seems like you may have received some disimformation. To me its a good idea which would pass the time for your customers.

I don't think so. I think it is only illegal if you are charging people to watch the movie. I am not an expert, but I know when I go to a Nail Salon, they always have movies playing.

No. You own the video, you have the right to show it to whoever you like. Hence movies in Air Planes. If your burning copy's of it tho... that's a problem.
