I say of course they were a failure. The 94 Bulls sucked compared to what they were before 94. The 94 Bulls record was 55-27, they couldn't reach the COFERENCE FINALS, & was only a 2nd round playoff team. Before 1994 the Bulls were a 3-peat DYNASTY TEAM, not an 1 year championship team, a back to back to back dominate DYNASTY TEAM. How are you going to go from a dominate dynasty team to a regular playoff team that can't reach the coference finals? That Bulls team sucked compared to what they were before 94. I'm sorry MJ haters, but dropping from a DYNASTY TEAM(not championship) to a team that FAILED to reach the CONFERENCE FINALS is a complete failure. If MJ's impact wasn't so great they should of at least made the finals. But they didn't. MJ was the Bulls.

and the bad call by the ref isn't an excuse for the 94 Bulls not making the conference finals. Because the Knicks had bad calls on them throughout the series & that game also. That's part of the game. No excuses!

Hoopfan,
you act like 57 games were their only record with MJ. Before 94 don't you remember 67? So that means it's a 12 game drop without seeing any finals....lol. Now that's failure.

Hey Smitty,
shows you how much that you know! They weren't even in the conference finals, so how were they one game away from the finals? Get your facts right & then make you're comments. Because at the moment you're looking like a moron!

Why are you so obsessed with the 1994 Bulls? Are you afraid of the fact that that team proved they could win without Jordan?
Going from 57 wins with Jordan, to 55 wins without him is definitely NOT FAILURE. Especially after everyone, including Phil Jackson himself, predicted the Bulls would crumble when Jordan retired.
Once again, you give Jordan WAY more credit than he deserves. Wilt Chamberlain was much more dominant than Jordan was, and yet he only won 2 titles. Why? Most of his career he didn't have the players around him to help him win, like Russell did.
Same with Jordan. He never even had a winning season until Pippen and Grant arrived. And as they added players, and a new coach, they won more games and went deeper into the playoffs until they got on top. So it wasn't just Jordan, it was his teammates as well.
Why wasn't he winning championships in 85,86,87,88,89, or 90 then, if he WAS THE BULLS??? And we won't even go into 1995. LOL
And no, I'm not an MJ "hater". I just don't believe the hype like so many of you do.

You're question was "do I think the 1994 Bulls were a complete failure ?" The only answer is :no
How did YOU think the Bulls would do after Jordan retired? Did YOU think they'd win 50+ games and make the second round of the playoffs? NOBODY, thought the Bulls would do as well as they did, so no, they were not a complete failure.
Look at all of Jordan's peers; Wilt, Russell, Bird, Magic, Robertson.....their teams completely fell apart after they retired. Not Jordan's team. They actually did pretty well without him.
And once again, if he was as significant to the Bulls success as you say, then he would have put them over the top when he returned in 1995 (no, he wasn't "rusty").
And the only fair comparison is year by year. By using your way, then the Bulls still slipped 10 games WITH JORDAN ( 67 wins in 92 to 57 wins in 93 ) LOL

You kinda answered your own question... but i have to disagree that the '94 Bulls were a failure. They lost to a talented Knicks squad that made the finals, and do not forget that the year before the same Knicks team pushed the Bulls to seven games, with Jordan, in the conferance finals. Grant, Paxson, Cartwright, and others were no longer in their prime, and they had every reason to be at least content with being a top-eight team in the NBA. And the 94' dropoff was nothing compared to the 99', when the Bulls missed the playoffs completely.

Was Michael a failure before Pippen came along? That's the question you should be asking yourself, james.
Of course Jordan was a failure! Three years, three straight losing seasons, three straight first round playoff exits (two of them SWEEPS). A playoff record of 1-9 (I'll save you the trouble of digging out a calculator, that's a .100 percentage).
Such was the life of Jordan before Scottie came along to bail him out.
So if 3 in a row is a dynasty, what's EIGHT in a row? Guess we'll have to come up with a new word for that one, huh?
"Not much" - Bill Russell, when asked what he thought of the Bulls winning 3 titles in a row.

Um, by losing the arguably the best player in league history. Without Jordan they played exactly to their talent--a better than average team. Dropping from a dynasty team to a team that is still better than most of the league is not "complete failure" in my mind. If it is in yours, then so be it.
