Why not? Servers work their butts off !!
If you go out and enjoy a meal that you did not have to shop for, prep, cook, or clean-up after, then why not give a proper tip to the person who helped make it enjoyable?
Servers in Cali get the full min. wage of $7.50 per hour and it doesn't seem to be a problem here.

First of all, are you aware that servers have to claim 8% of the food they sell each day? That means everytime you eat out, the person that took care of you is paying a portion of your bill to the government? Now, that said, servers work very hard. Have you ever attempted to take care of 30-40 people at the same time, anticipating there needs, keeping a smile on your face when you may be in the ninth hour on your feet, and still make money? It is a very difficult job. Why don't you try doing it for one week, and see if your mind changes about the amount of money we deserve to make!
Oh, and one more thing, a server making more money does NOT affect the prices in a resturant. That is based completely on what ordering costs are. When farmers have bad crops due to weather or whatever, then they charge more to sell to distributors which in turn charge more to sell to retailers, which in turn charge the public more to eat it! See how that works? Its called food cost in resturant terms. Don't make false statements about something you obviously no nothing about!

An increase in wages does not cause an increase in prices. Prices cannot be arbitrarily raised by business. Business already asks the top dollar they think they can get. If they felt the market would pay more, they would already be asking for more. This explains why the business community and their representatives, the right-wing politicians, are always outraged by wage increases. Wage increases come directly out of profits. If they could just be easily passed on to the customer, wage increases would be irrelevant and no business owners or right-wing politicians would make a sound.

I'm torn on that one. While it sounds nice in theory, tips are going to go down which means only working for minimum wage. However on a good night, even after "reporting" tips and tipping out the help, it's a nice feeling to still walk out with $200 on top of just $3.09 an hour. I figured one night I averaged $36 an hour. Better than some of my friends with professional office jobs!

Because if you ever worked as a server you would completely understand We work our butt off and do everything that we can to make your meal and service great and some people run your butt off waiting on them some are very rude and treat you like you are nothing Then they run up a big bill and leave you NO tip you still pay taxes on that because you pay taxes on your sales even when people don't tip you your check is nothing mine averages one dollar per hour that I work after taxes if I am lucky It is very hard work We don't just wait on customers we clean ,stock and cashier at most places for very little pay! Thank God for the good tippers!

Servers deserve to make the minimum wage. They work very hard to satisfy customers and ensure that they have a positive dining experience. If you think this is an easy job, you are out of your mind. It takes customer service, organizational skills, and also personality and finesse to put up with customers like you. Maybe you should try it yourself and see if you still are of the same opinion that we don't deserve to make the minimum wage!! I have been a sever for years and its not because I'm uneducated, its because it has afforded me the opportunity to make enough money to put children through college and law school. Before you ask stupid questions like this one, get your facts straight!

I definitly support it! I currently serve to help pay my way through college. I make only $2.13/hr and that all goes to taxes so I really am living off of my tips. And there are nights when I'm tipped less that 10% and I STILL have to tip out 2% of my total sales to the busser and the bartender so I walk out of work tired, smelly, and broke. When they raise minimum wage, I will make... uuummm maybe $5/hr so I'll have a little more to show for on that bi-weekly paper that reminds me of how broke I am and why I'm currently in college!

Many do not necessarily support it. I did not like it. You never get a paycheck; it is eaten away by taxes.
Your paycheck comes from nightly tips. Then you must tip out a bartender, bus boy, hostess, expeditor. If patrons only tip you, on average, 15%, then you walk with about 10%. So, in this example, you must sell $1000 worth of food per night to make 100. That is a lot of food.
I, because of my restaurant experience, ALWAYS tip 20%.

tips from crappy tippers aren't the ones that make my day anyways. people who appreciate service with a smile and the extra things that a great server can do to make your time in their restaurant special will always give good tips. just look at hostesses and concierges. they get paid a decent wage by their employers for doing their jobs, as they should, and people who receive especially great service tip them generously to boot.
