Well geologists say that when the earth was configured in the Pangea formation about 200 million years ago glaciers carved out many of the great plains that we see today. ie: the midwest was once covered by glaciers that explains why it is so flat.

Glaciers are still around today. They are still carving out landscape, although not at as great a scope as streams.
