Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus

The First Use of the Word Scuba
In 1939, American, Dr. Christian Lambertsen designed a 'Self-Contained Underwater Oxygen Breathing Apparatus' for the U.S. military. It was part of the war effort, code-named 'SCUBA'. Lambertsen's 'SCUBA' gear worked for shallow dives, but the gas mixture was wrong for greater depths and divers were dyeing from the oxygen toxicity.

The others are right. SCUBA stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

What they didn't tell you is that it was invented by Jacques Cousteau. (but perhaps you already knew that)
