Try a pacifier. My lactation consultant actually told me to give my girls one before I even left the hospital because they kept trying to use me for a pacifier. I had been completely against them but I tried it and it worked. Just make sure that you can tell when they're hungry and when they just need to suck. Of course he may have just needed to nurse because of a growth spurt.

If you keep an accurate time record you will know when it is hunger or just being fussy. Infants who breastfeed want to eat every 1-2 hours. If it has been 1-2 hours since the last time he ate, then feed him again. All you are teaching him now is not only is your breast a source of food, but a source of comfort as well. Feeding is always going to be a source of comfort with infants, but if you offer the breast just to pacify him, it will be hard to wean him when he is older, or to even be able to put him down and get some housework done. Only offer your breast when it is actually time for feeding. You can also try checking his diaper or his temp. If he's just fussy, walk with him, rock him, or sing to him(or all three!) Sometimes they just get fussy and there isn't much we can do about it too.

#1 a baby will only get milk from your breast if they want it. It is hard work to get milk out. If they just want to suck they will just suck and nothing will come out
#2 It is normal for babies to be cranky in the evenings. That's just the way some babies are:
"Cluster Feeding and Fussy Evenings
... My baby nurses and fusses all evening! What's wrong? "

My baby is fussy! Is something wrong?

#3 It is impossible for a baby to use mom as a pacifier. That is what moms are there for -comfort, suckling, etc. Some babies WILL accept a mommy-substitute in the form of a pacifier, some will not. And some mommies do not believe mommy should be replaced with an object.

I'm pretty sure you dont have a 4 hour milk supply. More than likely he was sucking for soothing......which probably started from being hungry. How old is he? Maybe he had a tummy ache. Keep track of what you're eating because something you ate might be bothering him.

If he turned the breast away, hunger probably wasn't it. Was he drawing his legs up when he cried? that usually indicates a gassy tummy and will cause fussing. Did you try walking or rocking him? the motion will sometimes calm babies down. I had a real fusser almost 30 years ago...walked many hours.

No, he didn't want to nurse for hours. He's probably got gas. If he's hungry, he'll smack his lips, suck on his fists, or sniff your breasts (if you're holding him). Nursing almost always soothes a fussy baby... but if that's not doing the trick... strip him down, make sure he's got nothing poking him or hurting him. If he's pulling his legs up when he's crying... he's got gas. Try Mylicon, or Gripe Water. Exercise his legs by bending them towards his stomach to help with the pain. Sometimes nothing works... but letting them cry it out.

My first did this, and I fed her as long as I could bear to, then I took a break and tried again. Looking back, I know that she was just feeling fussy, but being on the breast did help her. It's so hard when they cry like that, but just keep trying to comfort him.

Usually a baby will pull away if they don't want any more to eat. If you've changed his diaper, burped him and he's okay otherwise, could be that he is still hungry. Try a bit of breast milk and rice cereal. Make sure to burp well, that gas can cause them to be fussy too. I'm mom to 3.

Does your baby use a pacifier? Maybe he just needed something to help soothe such as a pacifier, but your nipple did the job! You can give him a tummy ache from feeding him to much. How young is he? Do you give him mylecon. I breastfeed and when my baby was brand new to the world she would get gas really bad.

umm.. your Q says that he is your bf baby if soo why is he on your titty? if he is yours then how old is the baby mosy babies have to burp after feeding it was most likly gassy uasually they pull up there legs but my son didn`t he would put his fist close to his kneese but without pullin up his legs.he could have colic or he could have been uncomftable or maybe he likes to suck soo give him a paci.. could be lots of things.. he could have just needed alittle comforting? try walkin, dancing, rocking or holding him on your chest and bouncing but not too hard just bending your knees. after aweek or two you`ll know what every cry means don`t worry he`ll be fine..and yes overfeeding can give a baby a tummy ach.my son would nurse untill he threw up but then i found out it was b/c he has an over-active stomach witch was telling him he wasn`t full and then it would over digest so he wasn`t peein or poopin as much he had to be stiched to formula..how long did you feed him?
