Personally I believe that when we die, our consciousness as individuals goes with us. The rest of the world goes on its merry way ... I haven't decided about reincarnation yet - the rational part of me doesn't think much of the idea, but another part wants to believe that eventually all our karmic debts get paid one way or another.
Every thing that lives has a beginning, a period of growth, a period of decline, and an end. Think of the flowers in your garden or your faithful dog. There is nothing to be afraid of. It's a very natural cycle.
