Yes there is.
Look it up on-line; you'll find techniques.
Sometimes their names alone will make you want to just pass over and some you shouldn't.
I'd guess this is why the first answerer gets lucid dreams... You go through several REM periods with one of the "strongest" being after you've slept for 5-7 hours. If you go back to sleep after sleeping about this long, you're more aware or conscience.

I've had several lucid dreams because I took a mid- morning nap or I woke up too early. I've read of many people that achieve lucid dreaming this way. One thing I have to include is that it might be easier if you actually get out of bed for 10-20 min. Otherwise, it's like you never woke up. You have to give your mind a chance to wake too.

I suggest reading what you can so you have more options to choose from and just give things a try.

Theory is that we dream about what we have been through during the day as we drift off to sleep ans as we begin to become alert again.

So, while dreaming we fall into a deep sleep. While we are nearing full alert from deep sleep, dreaming occurs again.

While all this is suggestive, the fact is that some people drink different stuff to sedate them self.

Then there are those of us who do fall asleep rather quickly, and at the other end of the spectrum we are shocked out of bed by our alarm clocks, both extremes tend to cause one to forget what we dreamed just before and after in the hustle and bustle of life.

I dont' know of any set techniques, but lucid dreaming happens to me mostly when its daytime and I can hear the outside world going on around me when I sleep. At night, its harder for me because its so quiet, and I fall into deeper stages of sleep. but when the sun shines through the window, the birds are chirping, traffic is driving by, and people are talking, that is when I get to lucid dreaming the most

You can take some DMT (dimetheyltraptamine) if you want to have the same feeling while awake. All dreams are really produced by this same chemical which is naturally found in the brain's pineal gland. They say that DMT is responsible for Near Death Experiences too. Good luck finding DMT since it is highly illegal in most places.

I started asking my self "is this a dream?" any time anything out of the ordinary happened during my waking hours and sure enough one night something unusual happened and I asked myself if I was dreaming and I realized that this time I was dreaming.
