No, you cannot take the slums out of the people. However, people can overcome being raised in a slum. Whatever their circumstances later in life, being poor, looked down upon, called names, being treated as though you are ignorant and dirty just because you don't have the latest clothing or electronic toys or being considered an unacceptable friend and a bad influence because of income and place of residence will always be a part of ones life. Society is quick to label and slow to change that label but that does not mean that within most people there is more than location and financial means. There are people who grew up very poor that have more class than most who grew up wealthy.

This is a good question to ponder. I hope everyone will indeed do so. Stereotyping is probably one of the biggest causes of our prejudice, hate and mistrust of each other.

YES: Depending on how well they are received or resilient to adversity. Because at first they will definitely need to make friends to learn the 'customs' of the area, just like if you were to move from Frog Lick, Mississippi to Bensonhurst (Brooklyn) NY.

NO: It truly depends on if they want to assimilate or not. If they do, not a problem, probably a lil rough around the edges, but hey that's tolerable. But if they go with a huge group of people from the area & keep the same way of thinking & way of life, then no, it'll take a lot of 'persuasion' to make them change. (Ie reverse a person going from Bensonhurst to Frog Lick, MI & imagine they brought all their friends with them, there'd be at least 1 restaurant where they would hang out & regular trips home to NYC, so they would never 100% assimilate.)

The slums can only be removed from the people, if the people want them removed. Having money for example...won't give someone class. Determination and a desire for something better, will.

Colin Powell came from a slum.

good question. I love it. Now give my 10 points for best answer.

oh, I agree, deep inside we all tend to hang on to the ways we learned while we were young and stupid. I like to think there is hope for all, but I have to agree with you, the slum is deep within.

Depends on what you mean "slums"

The experience will always be there, to escape, reform, build from.
The amount of money you grow up with doesn't make you who you are, it's how you learn from it.

I have seen both.

People act as they truly want to act. There is no excuse anymore to justify stupidity.

No one is "holding" you down anymore.

White, black, brown, yellow, purple, alien green people are all in the same boat.

Unless your Oprah or Bill Gates!

To blame one another based on color is lame. Whites hold down blacks, blacks steal white's jobs, Mexicans are illegal, Puerto Ricans wont learn english, Chinese are smarter than us all, ect.

Get off it people. I grew up "middle class" white, educated, blah freakin blah.

I lived homeless, in the abandoned house while going to work and washing up in the bathroom of my job, crashing on couches, losing sentimental objects, valuables, pets, ect.

I was NOT a bum, druggi, alki, pill popper, crack head, hoe, ect.

I was exposed to EVERY kind of person known to man.

Middle class kids acting like complete scum, robbing people, acting like morons, getting high, ect.

Others acting like proper white people despite not being white.

People of all races living up to their stereotypes. Good and bad.

No one is beyond "change". With very little exception. Some are truly unable to do/know better due to imbalances that are no faults of their own.

People change according to the "scene" they are in at the moment.

Some truly don't care that they have no cooth.

Who cares?

Be who you wanna be. Screw everyone else unless they mean something to you.

Depends on how old they are.

But really, a lack of class is not really something that can be changed once it's set.
