I personally think that you should use a continental grip, but my coach, who was a pro said that you shouldn't. I also take lessons from another teaching pro and he said that you should. I'm kind of stuck. Well tell em what you think.

well, on a volley you should always use continental grip. whoever told you otherwise is wrong. However, on a drive volley (like a groundstroke, but hit on the full) you should use the same grip that you use on your forehand. However drive volleys are very very risky and are not a recommended shot.

On volleys and serves you should use continental always, except when drive volleying

You do not have to go continental eastern is good enough . The key thing is that you are comfortable hitting both your forehand volley and backhand volley with the same grip. The continental grip will work also I just have found it to be a bit more extreme. Ideally you want to Have a semi western or western for your forehand ground stroke, and eastern or Continental for everything else. The less thinking you have to do about strokes during a match the better, Good luck

No, continental is the way to go. What was the other suggested grip? Continental gives you the best combo of power & accuracy. Of course, this is when playing at the net. If you're doing a volley from further back in the court use your normal grip.

I happen to use an eastern backhand grip because it's the most comfortable grip for me.

Most of the good players use continental though, so it definitely can't be a bad way to go : )

lol I actually know it isn't. Your coach needs more sleep, go continental (or something close).

Continental is by far the most versatile grip to use when volleying. If you want or need you can put topspin or slice on a volley. You're coach is an idiot that doesn't know how to play properly.
