The Civil war's main purpose was to preserve the union of states The United States abolished slavery and because of that the southern states formed a nation called the Confederate States and tried to secede from the union.
The southern states economy was based on an agriculture which they thought relied on slave labor.
The northern states had a industrial based economy and had realized how horrible the act of owning another person was and could not stand to allow it to continue in a country that was built on the belief that all men are created equal but also knew that the nation had to remain as one

The civil war was important cause it showed that slavery was wrong and it united the USA under one big banner after it was over. Also, it shows how different people can be in just one country!

It settled the question of whether or not an individual state could choose to reject the Constitution.

It also broke the stalemate the North and the South had had in Congress for years.

It helped to define the balance and soveriegnty between state and federal governments, it proved that the Constitution was a viable, stable document, it led to the end of slavery, and to some extent, it redefined the role & responsibilities of the federal government.

Because It helped unite our country. If it weren't for the civil war and all those men and women who helped reform america, we would not be were we are today.

Of course it was...it ended slavery. Slavery was our country's biggest shame. Our next biggest shame was segregation. But we're much better now. And I'm proud to be an American!
