why do people call themselves Ninjas? I doubt ninjas laze about all day sitting on myspace calling themselves ninjas....
and what about pirates? ever since Johnny Depp strutted around as Jack Sparrow suddenly everyone wants to be a pirate...

because it's a trend.
ninja's are probably one of the coolest things you can be. so people think they actually look cooler by calling themselves ninjas.

People are sheep. They want to be whatever you tell them to be. You just have to tell them in such a way that they think it was their idea. No one said "hey, want to be a pirate and buy all our merchandise" They just glorified a character and gave him traits that most people are either too stupid and cowardly to have, or to stupid to realize are not good traits.
