A hammock
Camping equipment
New fishing pole
Bug-Off (to keep the mosquitos and other critters away)
Take him out to a nice dinner on his birthday, or since he just got back, make it a party at a restaurant with friends and relatives there.

wow, how uncanny-my husband is going to be 27, was in the Navy in Japan, and likes all the same things...hmmm maybe he's living a double life...just kidding! LOL Anyway, my husband likes playing video games so that's always easy, but if I were you, i'd pack a nice camping vacation where you can go fishing, backpacking, and just being together.
I'm going to be getting my husband a hot air balloon ride for his birthday in August, i just know he'll love it.

How about 27 inexpensive gifts pertaining to the things that he loves. For instance since he loves fishing, maybe a keyring with a fish on it, that is one example. Put all of the little gifts wrapped in little packages and put them in one large box and he will be like a big kid on Christmas morning.

wow sounds just like my dad...my suggestion is that you go to some army surplus store and get him something there, or get him something that has to do with the navy. get him some new fishing gear or something or buy him a new grill. or take him to galveston to The Flight Museum and let him see all the old planes. my dad LOVED that...

You should plan a cookout for him. Invite over some of his buddies, get some beer, and just let them have a good time! Food, fun, and friends...what more could he ask for!

A metal detector. That's different and could make him some money in the process.

Take him to the gun store and buy him a cool gun. He sounds like the type who would appreciate it.
