Hi DO NOT APPLY ANYTHING till the moment that you know what kind of finish do you have! to find out what kind of finish do you have you can go to

http://www.floorsincalifornia.com/whychoosewoodfloors.htm
I will recommend you borrow a hand steamer and be care full remove the Gum
if you can get a steamer put a spoon into boiling water, for about 10 minutes, be care full emty the water and care full removed the spoon cover the spoon very fast with a paper towel and apply in circular moves in the affected area , problably you only need to do it once but if still is gum do the process again good luck!
what type of finish I have on my floor. This simple guide will help you determine if the finish is a wax finish, shellac or varnish finish or a surface finish.

If the floor was installed, or last serviced, before the mid '60s, you should assume the finish used was varnish or shellac. To determine this, scratch the surface with a coin or other sharp object in a corner or other inconspicuous space. If the finish flakes, it is probably shellac or varnish. Shellac and varnish are rarely used anymore and require full sanding to remove before application of a surface finish or wax finish.

Next, check the floor for wax finish. In an inconspicuous area, corner or behind a door, apply two (2) drops of water. If, within ten minutes, white spots appear under the drops of water, the floor has a wax finish. To remove the white spots, gently rub the spots with #000 steel wool dampened with wax.

If the finish does not flake from scratching with a coin and white spots do not appear from the drops of water, the floor has a surface finish and should be maintained accordingly

Ice is the best bet. Rub the ice over the gum and scrape it off once it gets hard or frozen.

Windex would be my second choice. (Remember, my Big Fat Greek Wedding?)

You can try mineral spirits but try it on a very, very small area that will never be seen first...you don't want to create a stain after the gum is up. Don't - don't use acetone or nail polish remover - they will stain the wood.

Gum comes up and out of just about everything - you just need the right combination for what its stuck to.

Get a plastic storage bag with some ice. Let the bag of ice sit on the gum for a while then when the gum is hard and brittle scrape it off with an plastic scraper or old credit card.

Goo Gone will work! http://www.googone.com/products_gg.aspx
Pledge makes a hardwood floor cleaner that will work! just squirt a little of it on there and will wipe up with a paper towel! (It also works very well on other wood furniture...I love this stuff! http://www.floorcareproducts.com/clean-hardwood-floor/index.asp
I have used both....I have messy kids just like you...just kidding! Well at least about you, my kids are really messy! I would recommend either one of them for the job...after you try ice because it is free!!! with a PLASTIC utensil of some sort like a spatula (metal will scratch the wood!!!!)

Ice, get it real cold and hard and should pop up easier. Make sure it is almost froze! take something like a spoon or butter knife it should pop up. Good luck other than that, lighter fluid but that might mess the floor up.

Freezing it and then scraping it off (with the grain if it's a wood floor) is your best bet. A plastic spatula would give you more leverage.

Do NOT use nail polish remover. Use either ice or a product called goobegone or goofoff.
