The NIT is a tournament run by the NCAA that contains teams that were not invited to the large NCAA tournament. It contains a 32 team field and generally gets much less attention than the NCAA tournament. It is sometimes called the Not Invited Tournament by it's detractors, although it actually stands for National Invitational Tournament. It was the original mainstream tournament, predating the Big Dance by a year. It was independent from the NCAA until 2005, when the NCAA purchased it for over 56 million dollars.

The NIT used to be held in much higher regard than today. The NCAA tournament used to only have conference winners playing, leaving out many good conference runner-ups or unaffiliated teams. The NIT invited those teams and in many cases had a much higher caliber of basketball.
The NCAA tournament started expanding several decades ago and made the NIT obsolete, as far as top college hoops goes,
The NIT now has a preseason NIT and postseason NIT. The postseason NIT is basically for all the teams that didn't make the NCAA's but still had decent to good years.
Unlike the NCAA tournament, the early rounds of the NIT are all played at the true home court of the higher seed. Not until the Final Four of the NIT do the games shift to Madison Square Gardens (same place each year).
The preseason NIT is one of the premier invitational tournaments to kick off the college basketball season, along with the Maui Invitational and Great Alaska Shootout.

The main difference that the NCAA Final Four and the NIT is that the NIT is a lower tier tourney. Although as of last year the NIT is now owned by the NCAA.

The NIT is now for teams not quite good enough for the NCAA tournament. Back about 40 or 50 years ago though....teams wanted to be in the NIT.

The NIT is basically a parting gift for those not in the NCAA Tourney. They wont get a chance to be national champs, but they can still win something. Teams that are snubbed or just werent good enough to enter play in this tourney. Basically, a team such as Florida State gets a number ranking in the tourney because it is the best of those "lesser teams".

The NCAA tourney features the top 64 teams in the country, all the conference champions and the rest with the best records. The National Invitational Tournament is comprised of all the other teams with winning records or mass appeal who did not get into the "big dance"
Either way lots of exciting basketball lies ahead, enjoy !

In layman's terms...the best of the loser's. I know that sounds harsh, but it kinda is. If a team is not good enough for the NCAA, they get the invite to the NIT.

If you win the Final Four you are the national champion, if you win the NIT you are the 66th best team in the country.
