Old age is the time when you need your spouse the most.
With the breaking of the joint-family and the resultant nuclear-family also being small further aggravated by the children migrating abroad in pursuit of their careers, the old couples find themselves lonely, insecure, unwanted, isolated, neglected, abused, physically and medically weaker .....sort of Orphaned Parents.
It becomes worse when you are single and especially for women who might be relatively younger for in addition to the above, they might have to face abuses of different kinds like attracting undue male attention, unsavoury phone-calls, smses, threats, propositions etc, etc, etc...........this might become so great that it might jeopardice their daily living and turn them and their young child/ren into nervous wrecks.
Unfortunately, India is still not a welfare state and so it's citizens have to fend for themselves. As a result we find single or even sometimes a couple taking refuge in an old people's home where they seek Security in a group of diverse people. Also since their caring is looked after by paid-personnel everything becomes impersonal and regimental. Thus, they suffer from an Isolation of a different kind which still is much further away from the ideal they were seeking in the first place, akin to a person being treated in a hospital or nursing home.
The best solution for single people (old and sometimes not so old ) in the above circumstances would be to get married again whatever Society thinks or does. For this very act of marriage again throws up the prospect of Commitment between 2 individuals otherwise living under great odds for which society still has no viable solutions. Also, the legal binding which the marriage offers removes all sense of suspicious motives which otherwise may unnecessarily get raked up by interested people.
This is in short, the best solution for the physical, mental and social well-being, being offered in today's scenario of social turbulence.

Yes of course. Why would you really want to spend the rest of your life alone. Other people who've lost someone is just like you will want to be with someone else too, not all of them though. There's a couple in my parents sunday class that have been married for 8 or 9 years now, they both lost their first spouse.

Some do, some don't. I have an great-uncle who's wife was my grandma's sister, a few years after she passed away, he re-married. And we as the family accepted it and I believe that it's acceptable to society.

the phrase"acceptable to society" is a little strange to say the least. however, yes, those that are older and have lost their partner do marry if they wish. i say older b/c my dad, 78 yrs, re-married last year but i'd hardly call him old. age is a state of mind.

Most definitely! Who cares what society thinks? I've never heard a negative comment of elders remarrying. Do what's best for the two of you. Good luck!

Yes, they marry again, and yes, it is acceptable. People are not meant to be alone. Old or otherwise.
