i dont think they are trying to "look white", maybe they just like the look, just like many of us "white" women try to get a suntan,,,, its not because we want to be black

Straighten our hair is not to look like a white woman. Its just much easier to deal with that way. Which is the same reason a white women with curly hair straightens her hair. As far as the blonde thing goes not every black women does that or wants to and I dont know why they do, nor do I care. Why are you so insecure that you must ask a question like this to put down a woman of another race? Do you feel threatened by black womens beauty?

I don't understand why you would feel that. I 'straighten'(perm) my hair because it looks better to me. Not because I have seen any white woman that looks like me. I would gander to think that that is why most of us 'straighten' our hair. Just because something looks good on someone else does not say that it would look good on another. Some of our hair is naturally straight. And as far as the color of our hair, the same holds true. I think that is the label that some want to give us. Believe me, I am comfortable in my own skin. Now had you said something about someone changing the color of their skin, then we'd have a conversation but you are in the wrong ball park with this one. May God Bless U.

*straightening of hair*

when africans were brought to the americas as slaves, many cultural artifacts were left behind. this included personal grooming acoutrements, such as combs, shells, environmental additives, etc. i once read that slaves used their masters' old utensils to groom their hair! if you look at ancient combs from egypt and other parts of africa, they look like afro pics of today. it has taken black folk years (and it's still a process) to get in touch with their hair, amidst the media and the negativity in society that comes with being different than the norm.

women - not JUSt black women...- straighten their hair in order to style it in certain ways. straightening is also done to make the hair more convenient to comb abd groom. we live in a fast paced society...not too much time for tangles and knots in the hair.

SOME black women do have a complex about have nappy hair. not all, but some do. SOME black women straighten their hair simply because that's what they choose to do...it has nothing to do with whiteness or shame. straightening can be temporary or permanent. it depends on the woman. to really know why a woman does what she does, the best thing to do is to speak with the individual. don't generalize.

*dyeing of hair*

black women and their hair go way back. black women, i feel, assert a special authority over their hair. i think it's a way of showing society, "this is my beautiful black hair and i can style it how i want to style it." hence, the streaking, splotching, and bleaching of the hair. just look at a black hair magazine....styles upon fancy styles galore. a black woman can be just fierce with her 'do...black women get quite creative with the perms, curls, braids, twists and locs. it's a reclamation of beauty.

i think that most women who go blonde, including black women, really think that "blondes have more fun." for them, it's a sign of prettiness and sexiness. why? society made it that way. blondeness and blue-eyedness is supposed to be at the tippy top of the attractiveness scale. i suppose that's because not many people possess those features. americans are brainwashed to believe that blondeness is prized. it's no wonder that some black women think it too.

Trust me. None of those women are under the impression that they look White. Most Black women who straighten their hair do it because it is easier to manage and style. As for bleaching it blonde, I'd like to know myself.

Look white? No thanks. I'm not saying there aren't some beautiful white women out there but I'd never like to be one. Straighten my hair? Yes I've done it but not to look white. I did it by mistake thinking my hair would be more manageable and save me time. Boy was I wrong. People of all races dye their hair. So when a white person dyes their hair purple or green are they trying to look like a crayon? The answer is no.

I would consider changing your thinking on this one a little bit because with your ideology all the white women who are spending money on lip injections, butt implants, tanning, perms, hair extensions, and braids would be trying to look black. That isn't the case.

It's just the style or trend. I know a number of white girls who have curly dark hair and do exactly the same thing. If white girls were dying their hair dark and getting perms, I doubt anyone would be thinking that they are trying to look black. Women are always doing stuff to their hair and I assure you that we are never thinking about race; we're thinking about what cut, style, and color looks best on us.

Generally people don't TRY to look another race. Everyone is striving for beauty. And Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone wants to be someone else, as well as people get sick of seeing the same old self looking back at them in the mirror. A little change is good, it gets you noticed. Ever notice gals with straight want it curly and curly want it straight? Blonde vs brunette? Nothing is natural anymore. A woman maintaining and up keeping herself is usually modifying as well. Mind you, I do think that most envy darker skin. The "tan" fad is crazy these days. Pay for a tan! Go figure.

How many times are people going to ask this ridiculous question? Since when do you know every single Black woman? I don't want to look like a White woman because she doesn't have anything that I don't. I love my natural texture, it's been natural my whole life and it's really long, when I straighten it it's down my back. There are a lot of Natural Black women.

"most" black women? thats a huge generalization. Personally, I am just the opposite. All natural here! But to answer your question as to why SOME black women do this.... probably because society has taught us that white women are the standard of beauty. How many examples of natural black women do you see in magazines and billboards??? None.

There are some brunette white women who change their hair to blond, and blond white women who change their hair to red. Are those white women "trying to be white" too?

There are white women who tan their skin, get butt implants, have collagen injected into their lips and braid their hair. So does that mean they are trying to be black?
