I'd be going on my own. I want somewhere rich with culture and sightseeing. Somewhere in the U.S.

St. Louis is an interesting place with a lot to offer visitors. As a few have said, the "high crime rate" takes place in east st. louis which you most likely will not have any reason to travel to. Most of the attractions people have mentioned are nowhere near that area. I have lived in St. Louis my whole life, and things that I never get sick of include:
-City museum
-Science Center
-Forest park which is great to walk, bike, go to the zoo, go to the art museum, and have picnics
-Going to the Hill, which is very close to forest park on the other side of Highway 40, it has many great and cute little shops where you can buy wines and cheeses, and yummy restaraunts too. Very romantic.
-Six flags is great during the summertime
-Ted Drews ice cream. You HAVE to go here if you end up coming to st. louis.
-My two favorite malls are the Galleria and Chesterfield mall, both right off of highway 40 and gorgeous. If you go to either of them, try the Cheesecake factory...so good.
-The Butterfly house.....so pretty and romantic.
-The Botanical Gardens
-Union Station, you need to try the fudge they make there!
all of these things are fun to go to even for me, and i've been to all of these things too many times to count! I would say if you've never been to the arch, you should go there too! I've seen that a lot in my life, so thats why I didnt list it above. Hopefully some of the negative reviews above me have not scared you away from our lovely city. As you can tell, theres plenty to do for yourself. Have fun!

We took our two daughters there last summer for five days. We could had stayed easily another week. We were pleasantly surprised. We stayed at the Drury Inn right downtown and we didn't use our car once. The fountains downtown are really wonderful.

The arch is cool - we went up the first day and got it out of our system. The museum there is nice.

Union Station is very nice. A day at Forest Park is a nice break from the city, accessible from the one-line light rail system that connects the NW city to downtoan and the Illinois suburbs.

Many good suggestions here, but the best kept secret is the City Museum. We figured okay a history museum -- WRONG!!! It is an old shoe factory that a scupltor is developing into this amazing museum, if you can call it that, of odds and ends. It is the most creative use of junk ever. It looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen but it is a blast! Your kids will love it and the adults will be in awe of how creative the place is.

The hotel desk told us to go...we ended yp going back a second day. We live near Chicago and actually ran into friends from our same town here -- it is that popular with the pople that know about it. (He happens to be a lawyer and agrees with the lawsuit look but still can't get enough of the place) You will not believe the outdoor area. If you go here and nowhere else in the city you will not be disappointed!!!

The first person who answered this question probably lives in like, some itty bitty country town. I live on the Illinois side of the Mississippi, only 20 miles from STL... yes, St. Louis has the "highest crime rate"... but most of it is drug-related. Only about 10% of it is violent crimes... MUCH better than L.A., New York, Chicago, Boston... ANYWAY...

St. Louis is a GREAT place to go on vacation. There is SO much to do, for people of ALL ages. The Arch, the St. Louis Science Center (which is HUGE and amazing, by the way), the City Museum (interactive museum... really fun), the St. Louis Art & History Museums, the St. Louis Zoo, Six Flags in Eureka, MO (opening in May), the Courthouse (where the Dred Scott case was held), the Botanical Gardens, and multiple malls (the Galleria, the St. Louis Mills, South County Mall...). Not to mention the most TO DIE FOR restaurants. There is such a wide variety... expensive, cheap, Italian, German, French, American... trust me, you'll be glad you went to St. Louis!

Oh, I almost forgot...

The new Busch Stadium (baseball), Scottrade Center (hockey stadium and concert/event ampitheater), the Fox and Muny Theatres, riverboat tours... the list goes on and on. Have fun in St. Louieee!

If you want the culture aspect, you can visit the Art Museum. Take a stroll through Soulard's Farmers Market. Catch a show at the Fox or Muny. Make a visit to City Museum. The Science Center can be somewhat interesting, lots of interactive exhibits. Ted Drews Frozen Custard.

Adult Culture is on the Illinois side of river. Stick to the premier clubs (Larry Flynts Hustler Club or Penthouse Club)

Touristy: Arch, Zoo, Helicopter tours

Fun Activities: Cardinals, Raging Rivers (grafton Ill), Six Flags. River City Rascals (minor leauge baseball in Ofallon, Mo) Gateway Grizzlies (minor leauge baseball in Cahokia, IL). Dave and Busters if you like to play games.

Also, as some have mention, don't believe the hype about crime. Espcially if they say "I do not live there". I have lived here all my life and never had a problem with crime. Most crimes are crimes of passion. Where the victim knew the suspect. Random crimes are few.

I am moving back to St Louis because of family. I live in a beautiful spot, come on vacation here,. Raleigh,. North Carolina. It is hot in the summer but it is so pretty, you are two hours from the ocean and four hours from
Asheville and the mountains. Beautiful place,. been here a year but miss family too much.

You could come over to East St Louis if you like crime, or St Louis for the Arch, but you really need to follow the others advice and keep going to Chicago.

wow...it's kind of sad all the negative things people have said. the crime rate report was highly exaggerated, by the way. not that there isn't any crime...all big cities have some crime.
but, I've lived here over 40 years and love taking friends/family from out of town sight-seeing....plenty of things to do! check out this link...
