Could be any of them. The Khmers ruled part of the Mekong area of Vietnam for a while. They also ruled Cambodia for a long time. That whole region was under control of the French for a while and called French Indochina.

Seems like you need a date or some notes or something. Did you do a google search or look at the wiki?

The once great Khmer Empire controlled parts of what are now modern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia.

I#m not sure about that. What I AM sure of is that the Khmer Empire and the Red Khmer are very different things. One was an Empire way back in the last millenium. The other was a totalitarian communist regime in Cambodia in the last century. Cambodia is still recovering from this grim era.
The Khmer Empire had it's roots in todays Cambodia, but i thinks it spreaded pretty far.

Cambodia. The communists called themselves the Khmer Rouge.

(Indochina is the name for that whole area, by the way.)
