I learned it this way: "tights" (stalactite) hang and "mites (think mice) (stalagmite)" run around on the ground. =)

When I was a kid a park ranger at Mammoth Caves explained them this way:
Stalactite = has to hang on tight so it won't fall off the ceiling
Stalagmite = might reach the ceiling one day
