I'd say it's a bit of both. There are over 100 years of history between the two teams and the two cities are only about 200 miles apart. 100 years of battles, shady trades, and heated moments climaxing with Fisk beating Munson's ***, Pedro and Zimmer, and Tek shoving leather in Arod's mouth after saying "We don't throw at .260 hitters."

If you've never witnessed it in person, make the trip to Fenway when the Yanks are in town. The electricity is in the air all day long and Yawkey Way is worked up to a frenzy.

The rivalry has always been there because of the proximity of the two cities. It's gotten strong over the past 10 or 20 years, as the two teams have become the highest-spending teams in major league baseball.

It is because the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, which caused the curse. There is also a long standing rivalry between Boston and New York.

It's because of the nature of the media...that, and the fact that one of the teams is located in New York, "The Center of the Universe." (At least Brent Musburger thinks it is). Other over-hyped rivalries....Cowboys-Redskins.... any matchup involving Notre Dame or the New York Rangers...Lakers-Heat...you get the idea.....do I sound like a cranky old fart? Ding!!!! Give that man a cee-gar!!!!!

It's the nature of the fans. They players could care less, but it's the fans that keep the fire burning
