According to what I heard on an NPR series on the history of jazz, scat-singing was 'invented' by Louis Armstrong. He was recording a song in the days before tape recorders were available, and his sheet music fell off his music stand, and he hadn't memorized all the lyrics. Well, since they were literally 'cutting' the record, and they couldn't go back for a second take, he finished up the song by singing nonsense syllables.
