Why is it that ... when I look in a mirror I look ok but ... when I look at a picture taken of me I see all the defects ?

I do that all the time too. I came to the conclusion a while ago that I was just not photogenic (though my opinion of the photo is always different than the other people around me). That's not entirely true though. As another response said, with a photo, you have more opportunity to analyze yourself and point out flaws. I am very thin and tend to notice how thin my face looks in photos more than moving mirrors. This is also greatly due to self-perception. If you expect to see an image unlike the one in your mind of what you look like, you will. Try to focus not on the flaws and details of your face but the expression. If you were happy, the beauty should shine through. Try it, it sounds corny, but worked on me.

b/c the angle and position you look at yourself in the mirror is dfferent from the angle/position the pic was taken in, therefore you will look different. also lighting and stuff plays a big part b/c there can be a huge different in pictures. and i guess when you look in the mirror you just look better! cus i always feel that way.

When you look in a mirror you are focusing on parts of yourself and not the whole picture. You are also moving. Your eyes are flying up, down side to side. You will tend to turn your head, etc to favor yourself. In a picture, you are frozen, it is easier to analyze, critique and focus on flaws.

I think maybe you are not photogenic. Some people are beautiful in person, but in pictures they look terrible.
