"Case in point: 'Love, love me do. You know I love you. I'll always be true. So please love me do...Wo ho love me do' Sounds like something a 4 year old would write...."

Now, these are not my words. This is something I heard somebody else say today.....what do you think?

Actually, the person who made the statement is an avid listener of rock music...mostly from the 60's and 70's.

The Beatles revolutionized rock music with their sound, not necessarily with lyrics, early in their career. If you listen to some of their later work such as Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road, you'll realize the lyrical talent of John Lennon. There's also a timeless quality to their songs, which is why people still play their music today. It's a sound that wasn't/isn't a fad therefore it doesn't wear out its welcome. I wish I could put my finger on exactly what they did right, but I don't think anyone's been able to. That's why we call it talent, legendary talent, and it's among the most elusive of all things intangible.

But I do respect your point of view (or that other person's rather) and I do understand what they mean about those lyrics. Like I said, if you check out their later work, including some of Lennon's solo work, I think you'll like it better, if you haven't already. Thanks for your question.

I totally disagree with that statement! The Beatles were a band that had a long career and wrote some amazing songs.
Much of their music still still holds up very well even though it was released over 35 years ago.
The Beatles weren't thrown together by some record producer like many of the boy bands!
The Beatles got together and paid their dues in clubs in Britain and Germany for years before they ever signed a contract.
Generations of fans have enjoyed, and will continue to enjoy, their music.
This will not happen with N'sync,or The Backstreet Boys,or 98 Degrees!

At the time..the words to that song were PERFECT. The Beatles came out only 5 years after Elvis.. Do you remember 5 years ago?
In just 9 short years the Beatles did every kind of genre music with only...what?... 150 number 1 songs?

NOBODY compares

Back in the sixties the lyrics were quite lame so the Beatles had the right to have lame stuff too. But they did evolve. I wouldn't call them forerunners for boy bands becaue they weren't created like the boy bands were. They were real musicians and songwriters not just cute guys who could dance and sing a bit.

I have to disagree about the Boy Band label; they at least played their own instruments, and their melodies were much more diverse-sounding than any boy band's ever could hope to be, and they were much more controversial than a boy band would dare to be(at least until said boy band was about to break up), As for overrated, I disagree there too. No one ever said a song's lyrics had to be profound on a universal scale, they just have to reach people on some level, which they have been doing for forty-plus years now.

The Beatles are the ones that changed music forever. None of those boy bands would be here today if it weren't for the Beatles. As a matter of fact, no rock band would be here if not for them.

I think your source has no idea of what they are talking about! The Beatles utilized so many different styles in their time it's just amazing. The "Love Me Do..." song is a very early song, take a listen to "Rubber Soul", better yet; The "White Album".

Really sit down and listen to the music. THey wrote incredible music for the time. Great harmonies. Fantastic vocals. Their voices fit together well. And look at the body of work. A tremendous amount of great music in a relatively short period of time. They will be appreciated forever. Overrated? Not in my book mister.
