Mizza has the correct answer.
It has nothing to do with the internet. Companies who change their name expend great amounts of money doing so. "20th Century Funds" changed their name to "American Century", I guess because they realized that the 21st Century would eventually come to an end.
The cost to trademark a corporate name can cost a company MILLIONS. Plus, if there was another company with a similar name (Century 21 Realtors), they might not have wanted to add confusion to the marketplace.

The actual reason is all down to the internet. When domain names first started to get snapped up in the early 90s some wiseguy (figuring that 20th Century Fox might want to change their name to 21st Century Fox) snapped up all the available variants of 21st C F. Despite threats of legl action - which had no foundation in law as there was/is no existing company called 21st C F- Mr Wiseguy refused to give his domain away and requested a fairly hefty sum. Pissed at him for being so annoying, 20th Century Fox decided a) NOT to change their name and, therefore b) not to pay the wiseguy any money whatsoever. Wiseguy has the domains but they aint worth anything

I think it's to do with the company being formed in 1935 - 20th century. It came about after the merger of Fox Film Corporation & Twentieth Century Pictures.

That's a good question. I've sometimes wondered that myself.
I thought at one point I saw something that just said "20th Fox" and left out the "century".

I think they can't change their name to 21st Century for because another company has already copyrighted that name.
