If we are talkin current Defensemen then I have to say Tomas Kaberle of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It is unfortunate that he is injured now but he is a great defenseman with good offensive skills and he bring energy to the ice which is something that the Toronto Maple Leafs need more of.
If we are talkin all time defensemen then of course I have to go with Brian Leetch. He was a great player who just had an all around good attitude on and off the ice. I cannot wait for his return to the Garden and I hope to be there for when #2 goes up to the rafters in the greatest sports arena in the world.

A lot of great answers here. I was born in Toronto, and like Kaberle, but going old school I loved Borje Salming. But he was not the best, I also liked Scott Stevens, Larry Robinson, Brad Park, the list can go on and on, including my faveorite playing now, Dion Phaneuf. I live in Calgary now, and I tell ya, this kid is phenomenal. But none of them can hold a flame ( no pun to Dion ) to Bobby Orr. He reinvented the position. Ya he won scoring titles, and created the rushing defenceman, but he is also still amongst the leaders for +/-. I had the p-leasure of seeing him play when I was a kid. He was at the end of his career, but he could still go from one end to the other in no time, dancing around all these "younger" guys. He scored one goal, but more importantly, blocked 2 shots, including an open netter that saved the shut out. Yup by far my fave, and the greatest ever.

Mine would be Dion Phaneuf. Hard-nosed hustle player. Can play defense and offense. Has a monster of a slapshot from the point.
LOL Jordan Staal isn't a defenseman!!!

Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney from the Penguins. Although Mark Eaton is pretty good too...when he isn't hurt.

Fedor Tyutin. He still uses the hip check, not many d-men do that anymore. He's just a really steady d-man who can play up on a rush if he has to.
