Personally, I feel MAKING a student write as a form of punishment is totally wrong. By forcing a student to write, it could very well turn that person off from any writing. However, if one was made to write an essay as to what they did and the consequences of those actions, it could be a learning experience. But to just make a student write about something...wrong, wrong, wrong.
In school, my best tests were essay tests. As I wrote, more information would be remembered. The fill in the blanks and multiple choice were bummers. I loved to write stories for my brothers and sisters, and I did quite well in college in my creative writing classes.

I don't think that writing an essay should be used as punishment in school. It may only cause the student to associate negative feelings towards writing, which can be a very enjoyable activity. I think that the punishment should fit the crime. Serving detention or suspension should be enough, unless the student is a repeat offender. After that, more drastic measures should be taken such as expulsion. Of course, no punishment is effective unless that parents are "on board" with the decision as well, and are willing to make changes and adjustments at home. What would you rather do, go to school or stay at home suspended and watching TV?

No, I don't think essays should be used as punishment. I'm a student and I hate it when teachers make me write. I also hate when there are a few students in the class messing around and the teacher makes the whole class write an essay. The teacher should only punish the ones causing the problem. My Adv. English teacher makes us write a thank you letter to her every time we have to go get something from our lockers. Personally that's what makes me hate the class so much.
