A fountain pen is heavier than a plastic-barreled ballpoint - it has more metal in its nib, a heavier casing, and far more ink in the barrel than a ball-point. Unless the ball-point is a 24k Cross pen, that is.

Depends on the fountain pen.

Most art supply stores carry "fountain" pens that are basically a light plastic handle and a metal nib (of stainless steel or another metal); these can be lighter than bulky-style ballpoint or gel pens.

The easiest way, if you can do this, is to pick up the pen and see how it feels in your hand.

normally heavier, because they have to withstand the dippling.

But if you get a cheap fountain pen and an expensive ballpoint, it could go the other way.
