It's been a while since I've heard anything original or even decent. Any suggestions?

Meerkats: good answer.

Apart from that... *sigh*. The problem with nowadays metal scene is that people here have no idea what true metal really is!! They try to pass all that NU and rap/metal and metalcore crap as something that has anything to do with real metal... Come on..!!

If you want an example of what TRUE, good melodic metal bands and power metal bands sound like, check:
Gamma Ray
Stratovarius
Sonata Arctica
Edguy
Rhapsody
Dragonforce

If you want some proper, mainstream heavy-ish metal, check:
Blind Guardian
Hammerfall
Manowar
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Motorhead
Dream Evil
Helloween
Iced Earth

In my opinion, I feel that the German based band Helloween is one of the best. They are a power metal band that is very fast sometimes yet melodic in sound. The vocalist is fantastic. He doesn't sing like those death metal bands that just scream crap, he has a very good vocal range. Their lastest release is "Keeper of the Seven Keys-The Legacy." This is a spin off from 87-88 when the did "Keeper of the Seven Keys part I&2" Their album "Time of the Oath" is one of favorites. The just released a live CD and DVD from their last tour. It sounds fantastic. Check them out on youtube.com. Their song "Power" is one of my favorites.

Savatage is also a great metal band, but haven't released anything in a few years.

Another good band is Nocturnal Rites. Their album "Grand illusion" is awesome.

Have fun,
J

If you can't find new heavy metal bands, then you're not looking hard enough. Don't expect them just to pop up on the radio one day. Twisted Tower Dire, Hibria, Icarus Witch, Overlorde, and Pharaoh are all bands that have come out relatively recently and have the classic metal feel while not sounding like rip-offs of Iron Maiden and the like.

Check out Six Ounce Gloves. I've seen them locally here and they had a release not too long ago that is really good.
Their only problem is they are pretty much stuck in a small town so get little exposure.

i'm not sure about new, but H.I.M. ( His Infernal Majestry) is pretty good. they're actually metal, sooooo...
but get the album Dark Light, in my opinion, the songs Vampire Heart, Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly, Under the Rose, Killing Loneliness, Dark Light, and Behind the Crison Door are the best songs. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metallica. Anything before their St. Anger album. The Black Album is the best.
