If you want the heart to be hollow (empty from the inside, which is I guess what you want. Cuz you said "how do i get the paper out after the mache' has dried?") just get a heart shaped balloon, blow it up, paper mache it, and hang it to dry. When its all dried up, insert a pin in the place thats around the knot you tied for the balloon (or any other place, but I always do that) and pop the balloon :)
If the heart you're doing doesnt need to be hollow, just do it using paper and keep the crumpled paper inside..

If you're trying to make a hollow shape, you can wrap the paper strips around a balloon. Make sure you have a thick enough wrapping that it will hold it's shape, let it dry, then pop the balloon. You can probably find heart-shaped balloons, it just might be hard to get the size you want.
If you don't need it to be hollow, it's prefectly acceptable to make the form with crumpled paper and leave the crumpled paper inside.

You could make a wire frame in the shape of a 3d heart and place paper mache around the frame.
Either way. If you're trying to make the heart hollow, just make sure that you fill it with something that won't stick to paper mache, which includes paper =P lol

If you want your shape hollow you can cut it in half, take out the inside , tape it back together. Then add more paper mache.
The chances are the pulp will have already absorbed into the newspaper and stuck it to your shape, so it's best left where it is.

Why take it out, you could mold round a heart shape if you have one[wrap in cling-film first] Slice in half when dry then stick both parts back together, you can do this with bowls plates etc. Enjoy your creating....
