Its basically a male thing, but its also a foolish one. There's no specific age for it as such, but it often starts the first time he loses some hair or hits on a girl 20 years his junior and gets the deserved shoot-down, heh.
You can't turn back the clock, nor can you undo old mistakes. What a man SHOULD do is get a grip by HAVING a grip and separate his male ego from doing the right thing. This includes making the most of what he already has, not sweating some imagined height he thinks he should have scaled by now or trying to make up for what he thinks were missed opportunities.
There should be no crises per se; you should simply seek to build on what happened and make NOW better. The only crisis lies in thinking there IS one. Yeah, health issues or money problems are a bear, but having some bleepin' perspective and a sense of humor can trump a lot of BS. Seeing that and being able to APPLY it decide the difference between an actual man and just being some overgrown GUY, hm?

If the average lifespan is 74 yrs then I would think midlife would span a few years before & after age 37. And that's pretty much what I observed of some people around that age. At that point you question yourself about what you've done or haven't done with your life & what you expect to do in the future. You wonder if you're still attractive to the opposite sex. You wonder if you are in the right job.
I remember one man I worked with who permed his hair (1970's) and started working out. He bought himself a sporty black car. Maybe he had an affair? Who knows? At any rate, he was a prime example of a man in a crisis.

I just went through my first I lost a job and that threw me into a depression for a year where I did nothing living on a few assets and cards.
I took a job with half the income I usually make to be able to ride my bicycle to and from, I decided to rid of my four wheel security blankets, and just use transit or my bike, I feel good about my decision because while I'm not flashy and I know maybe just a little can help.
It usually happen around fifty with a bunch of inner thought

For this situation, I'll say that mid-life is whenever the individual starts realizing thet their life is going way too fast and they are missing out. It may also be accompanied by feelings of decrease in mental/physical abilities.
The actual number is almost impossible to pin down, but I think it would have to be at LEAST the late late 30's.

The really frightening thing about "mid-life crisis" is knowing that you'll grow out of it.

For most people I know it starts around 40 to 50. They want to leave their wives/husband of many years for some young fresh out of college girl/boy who wants nothing but their money, and to be taken care of. The older adult wants someone good looking on their arm and an energetic sex partner.
So goose/gander. Its about the same for both men and women.
