It's still called a lady bug. Both Male and Female Ladybugs are called Ladybugs or Ladybirds.

hahaha, this is a perfect example of how common names can be misleading. The name ladybug or lady bird is very misleading for several reasons, first of all it is neither a bug or a bird, but rather it is a beetle.
Secondly, there are two distinct sexes among all beetles, a male and a female. Some, like the ladybirds are not easily noticeable, and it comes down to size (females usually slightly larger) and sometimes to differetn types of antennae or ovipositors (egg-laying tubes)
In lady birds it is difficult to see the difference between the sexes, the best fail-proof way to tell is to wait until you see a pair mating, the male is always on top.....hahaha, other than that it is difficult to tell the difference, but trust me, the males do exist.....But they are still both called ladybirds.... The other answer about Cocinellidae is a good one, both in a perverted way and is actually scientifically acurate. These colorful little beetles belong to the family Coccinellidae...so it makes sense! haha
If my nam eis beetle, you can trust I have some knowledge on the subject!

"ladybug".
The term refers to the species, not the gender.
