There is actually an equalizer setting on iPods. This will let you change things like bass, treble, etc...

Go to Settings, EQ, then select any of those settings.

You can also do the same thing on iTunes. Got to View, then Show Equalizer.

I personally like the "Lounge" setting.

Check the bitrate of the song before you upload it on your Ipod. Anything between 128-230 is good. Anything lower is bad. Anything higher is distorted.

its not about it being on an ipod, its about what format the music is in to begin with. generally if you rip it, the quality will be lower.
