Multiple things need to be known.
Not all computers are able to run vista (graphic intensive).
If you can run vista then you are probably going with a single home user license.
All other issues along with the above are solved with this tool.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
The site will direct you to download a tool that will test your computer and determine the proper item to upgrade to.
IF you are into performance then DO NOT upgrade. Vista is graphically better, but in early stages and buggy. Vista is also much harder on your computer (slows everything)

You may not want to get Vista just yet. However, if you do it depends on which XP you have.
If you have Home version you can uprgrade to Vista Basic, Premium, or Ultimate.
If you have the Professional version you have to upgreade to the Business or Ultimate versions ov Vista.
No matter what, make sure that your computer has at least 512 RAM (preferably 1024 or more) and an 800 Ghz processor at minimum. Nothing below this will work. There are other requirements, so look at the boxes before you decide.

Don't bother. Just type "vista problems" in the Search for answers box above.
While you're waiting for MS to fix the Vista problems. Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).
It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.
You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".
It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.
Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.
Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

I wouldn't go there just yet.
You probably don't "need" Vista at all.
Wait for Vista service pack 2 ... at least.
I have Vista Ultimate & a PC that can more than handle it. I had no driver or hardware issues at all ... yet still went back to XP Pro (Media Center).
I'll spare you the many reasons & details why ... just trust me.
Just my opinion ....proceed at your own risk ... you were warned.

What your are running now is not as important as to what your computer has in it. You need to go to Microsoft's web site and let your computer take the test to see if your computer can handle Vista. Keep in mind that Basic is not that great, Home premium is ok for day to day computing. Also remember that Vista is a resource hog and your computer needs to be a strong PC. make sure your have more than what it calls for in order to run Vista properly.
Good Luck.
Vista is nice, do not listen to Vista haters.

I wouldn't recommend getting it now, it still has kinks that need to be worked out, among other things. I would stick with XP.

None of them! If you buy Vista you will be sorry. Your printers wont work, neither will your video cards, your applications. Your sanity wont work either. Get smart and get kubuntu instead, for free, at www.kubuntu.org
