Right now I am running for the position of ASB president, but the girl I am running against is way more popular and outspoken than I am.

On my part, I have never been a popular or very outspoken person, but as my years in leadership have taught me, you don't need a loud voice to be heard.

Yea yea, I am the stereotypical high school asian girl, with the glasses, shyness and AP classes an whatnot, BUt contrary to what others may think, runing for this position isn't for my transcript; I really do think I can make a difference.

Help me out. As person who doesn't stand out in a crowd, what do you think i should do to win this thing?

Don't just try to win over the popular kids. Start making friends with the "loser" crowd. There are more losers than popular kids most of the time.. which means you win the election!

The qualities that are most beneficial to any canidate are
as follows.

1.) sincerity. Be open and honest in your discussions with people. You may not always agree with others views, so you have to be able to state your case without being antagonistic or argumentative. Compromise can be useful in many situations. Above all, however, you must be faithful and honest with yourself.

2.) Loyalty. You must be able to demonstrate you are loyal not only to your friends, but to the school as a whole and this goes back to your willingness to compromise in order to solve problems. If you are seen as ones sided, then that is where your support will come from and only from that quarter.

3.) Courage. You must be able to show you have the courage to take a stand for what you believe even though this may be unpopular with a majority of students. Then you must follow up by stating your case while acknowledging others dissent. Again, looking for the compromising solution whenever possible. That said, you must also realize there will be time when that may not be possible.

On a general campaigning note. If your opposing canidate is the more popular, then you must look for a support base from the forgotten or overlooked groups with in your school while still courting the so called popular main stream. Remember, a school is not much different than a community. Everyone will have differing views, if only slightly.

It is clear that you have enough confidence and belief in yourself to run for student council president, and that says a lot about your leadership potential. You have to think ahead of this other girl, who will be running on a personality platform (popular kids do this without fail). Build alliances--seek out students and student groups in particular that you consider important and influential, and talk to them about why you're running. Do not go to sports kids, they don't do student politics.
If you've chosen the right people they will see that you are about something really cool, and they will support you. And what's more, people who look up to them will follow their lead and support you as well.

Good luck, young lady!

Just do tons and tons of campaigning....it really does work! Be creative don't go for the typical buttons...have some creative friends help you if you can't come up with ideas. I once had a friend that was running for the Green Party and we handed out water bottles with personalized wrappers that listed water in third world country facts. She ended up winning. Just make a list of ideas and do them!

It's a tough decision running against a popular student. Your problem is your shyness, make little efforts to your schoolmates by greeting them but be natural because they might think that you are only greeting them because u want to win their votes. Just be sincere and show them what you really are.. Good Luck..
